Nancy Kalin grew up in Belmont, MA, and as a teen, attended classes at the Museum (MFA) School, and at the Massachusetts school of Art. She majored in Art History at Colby College, Waterville, Maine, and graduated from Tufts University with a B.S. in Education. Having met the artist, Philip Hicken while vacationing in Nantucket in the early 60’s, she took classes there, and went on to study privately with him in Watertown, MA, working in acrylics. In 1973-76, she studied with Margot Rosenthal in West Hartford, CT. After moving to Northampton in 1996, she met artist Nancy Miller, and was her student at the Guild Art Center, working in pastels, and eventually, oils. Also, Kalin has painted in workshops with Susan Ogilvy, pastelist, Howard Rose, an artist in oils, and Jane Lund, pastelist.

In addition to painting, Nancy is an avid quilter, amateur pianist, and was an active member of the Embroiderers League of America. Also she was a ceramist and belonged to the Ceramic League of Miami for 10 years.

In discussing her art, Nancy states that she strives for good design, color, and a sense of place. New England and its changing seasons is a constant source of inspiration, since returning to her “roots”, after having lived in Miami, Florida, for 21 years.

Nancy currently works in her studio, #454, at 221 Pine Street in the Arts and Industry building in Florence.
