Camp Norwich is hiring Pre, Junior and Senior Counselors, Unit Heads, and Program Specialists for their 2018 counselor staff team.  Descriptions and application requirements for all positions are outlined below.

Pre, Junior & Senior Counselors

These positions requires a commitment to the YMCA mission and its core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.  The YMCA values diversity, youth, and a broad vision of health and wellness which is enhanced by relationship building.

Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper.  The counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills.  Pre, Junior and Senior counselors also enforce safety and supervision practices at the direction of the unit head (see job description below) and camp director.

Job Duties:

  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in given camper group throughout the camp day.
  • Participate in parts of camp outside of typical camp session dates, hours, and program.
  • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to camp director or camp maintenance director.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Represent the camp when interacting with parents or community members.

Job Qualifications:

  • Senior Counselors must be 18 years of age and finished with high school.
  • Junior counselors must have completed their junior year of high school.
  • Pre-counselors must have completed their sophomore year.   The Pre-counselor position is considered to be part of the development progression leading into employment, and is an unpaid position.
  • Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.
  • Ability to interact with all age levels, including appropriate and friendly interaction with parents when necessary.
  • Capacity to understand principles of youth development and developmental stages of youth.
  • Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.

Camp Norwich – Unit Heads

Adventurers (3rd-6th)

Sports Camp (3rd-6th)

Unit heads manage and develop counselor staff to provide a camp experience that meets the intended camp outcomes of relationship building, belonging, and achievement.  They ensure that counselors understand and employ safety guidelines, proper supervision techniques and youth development practices.  Unit heads also provide support for counselors around camper behavior management and  assist in the management of the overall camp operation in collaboration with the camp director.

Job Duties:

  • Supervise counselors in the Unit to ensure delivery of a safe, fun camp program that meets intended camp outcomes.
  • Provide support for counselors regarding camper behavior management in cases where the counselors are struggling to handle the behaviors.
  • Run unit activities and family night, and participate in small group activities in order to enhance camp program and create strong relationships with each camper in the Unit.
  • Assist Camp Director in creating strong camper groups and counselor pairings.
  • Manage parent letters and camper birthday postcards.

Job Qualifications:

  • Experience as camp counselor at a similar camp program.
  • Experience in the development and delivery of programs and activities for similar program.
  • Experience leading peers and providing direct developmental feedback.
  • Comfort leading large groups and performing in front of large groups.
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors.
  • Ability to focus and remain effective in a busy environment.
  • Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.

Camp Norwich – Program Specialists

We are looking to hire specialists for the following programs:

  • Boating
  • Drama & Music

Job Duties:

  • Develop and deliver a program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers.
  • Design and deliver activities/programs that meet camp outcomes, match the abilities of the campers and make use of the camp’s natural environment.
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.
  • Assist in the implementation of staff training for specialty program to train other staff in their responsibilities at the program.
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the program area.

Job Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions.
  • Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.
